Starchart
Privacy policy
Effective 21 August 2026 · Southlight I/O
Starchart has no account and no sign-in. It collects nothing about you, it shows no adverts, and nothing you chart is ever sent to us. The page is worked out in your own browser, and the only thing that comes out of it is paper.
What we collect
Nothing. There is no account to make, no email address to hand over, and nothing in Starchart that reports back to us. It carries no analytics, no usage tracking, no telemetry and no crash reporting, and it sets no cookies at all. We could not tell you what anybody has made with it, because none of it reaches us.
This is not something we ask you to take on faith. The app contains no code that uploads anything: no web requests, no background sync, nothing that phones home. If that ever needed to change, this policy would change first, and the change would be something you turn on rather than something you find already on.
What Starchart keeps on your device
It does keep some things, and saying so plainly is more honest than claiming there is no data at all. All of it is stored by your browser, on your machine, and none of it is sent anywhere. Starchart remembers:
- the settings you last used, so the app opens where you left it
- the names you type onto areas of a page, such as your own habits, days or meals
- any spreads you save, under the names you give them
- the areas you draw when you design your own page
- a note that you have seen the introduction bar, so it stops appearing
- whether you chose the light, dark or dusk look for the site
That is the whole list. It is ordinary browser storage, and clearing the site data for southlight.io in your browser settings removes every bit of it. None of it is copied to us, so you do not need our permission or our help to delete any of it.
What comes out of it
The counted pattern and the trace overlay are built as PDFs inside your browser, and the saved picture is drawn from the same preview you are looking at. Your browser saves them the way it saves any download, and none of it passes through us. That is the point of the product: the output is a sheet of paper you copy by hand.
The three things that can leave your device, and you start all of them
- Sharing a spread. The Share button packs your layout choices, the names you have typed and any areas you drew into the web address itself, and copies that link to your clipboard. Copying it sends nothing. When somebody opens the link, their browser asks our server for that address, and the address carries the design with it, so treat a shared link the way you would treat any link: it goes wherever you send it.
- Telling us about a notebook. If your notebook is not in our list, the "Send this notebook to us" button opens your own email program with the make, model and dot counts already filled in. Starchart does not send it. You do, if you choose to, and you can change or discard it first.
- Emailing us. If you write to us, we have your message and your email address, because that is how email works. We use it to answer you and nothing else, and if you would rather we did not keep it, say so and we will delete it.
Loading the app itself
Starchart is a website as well as an installable app, so your browser has to ask southlight.io for the pages, the same as it does for any site. Answering that request means receiving it, including your device's address, because there is no way to send a page back without one. The site is hosted for us by Amazon Web Services, so the request goes through their service on its way to us. The site also fetches a page in advance when you hover over a link to it, so that it opens instantly. All of those requests are for pages, and they carry nothing about what you have charted.
Nothing on any Starchart page is loaded from anybody else's server. There are no third-party scripts, no embedded widgets, no external fonts and no trackers of any kind, so nothing on the page reports your visit to anyone. Once the app is installed it holds everything it needs, and it will chart and print with no connection at all.
Children
Starchart does not collect information from anyone, of any age.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version replaces this page and the date at the top changes with it. Any change that would let information leave your device would be described plainly here, and would be something you choose to turn on.
