Constellate

Privacy policy

Last updated 5 August 2026 · Southlight I/O

Constellate runs entirely on your computer. It has no servers, no account, no sign-in, and no way to send your photos or any information about them to us or to anyone else.

What we collect

Nothing. Southlight I/O does not receive any information from Constellate. There is no telemetry, no analytics, no crash reporting to us, no usage tracking and no account. We could not identify you or your photos if we wanted to, because the software never contacts us.

This is not something we ask you to take on faith. The application contains no network client code at all: no web requests, no uploads, nothing that phones home. If a future version ever needed to change that, this policy would change first, and the change would be something you turn on rather than something you find already on.

What it reads on your device

To sort your photos, Constellate reads, on your computer only:

  • the photo and video files in the folder you point it at
  • the information already inside them, such as the date and time a photo was taken, the camera make and model, GPS coordinates and image dimensions
  • place names, which are worked out from GPS coordinates using an offline geographic dataset that ships with the software. No location lookup ever touches the internet.

All of this is used only to decide where each file belongs and to show you what will happen before it happens. It stays on your device.

What it writes on your device

  • your sorted collection, in the destination folder you chose
  • a small index and journal inside the collection, so it can pick up where it left off and undo a sort. These describe your files, their paths, sizes and content fingerprints, and they never leave your machine.
  • diagnostic logs, stored locally. They record what a run did, so that a problem can be looked into. They are never transmitted anywhere, you can delete them whenever you like, and you decide if and when to send one to us.

Other software that comes with it

Constellate includes two third-party tools, and both run entirely offline on your machine. ExifTool reads photo information, and writes it only when you ask for a repair. An offline geographic dataset, from GeoNames, turns GPS coordinates into place names. Neither contacts the internet, and neither sends anything to us.

Children

Constellate does not collect information from anyone, of any age.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version ships with the software and is dated at the top. Any change that would allow information to leave your device would be described plainly, and would be something you choose to turn on.
